City and Germany-based kit company Puma have come to a £650m agreement on a kit deal for the Citizens and their sister operations.

The £65m per season deal is believed to be the second-most valuable in the Premier League, trailing only Manchester United’s £73m per season deal with Adidas. Barcelona currently has the most valuable deal in world football, receiving £132m per season from Nike.

The Citizens have been wearing Nike-made kits since 2013, and the new deal will kick in for the season starting in 2020. The deal will also cover Melbourne City, Girona, Atletico Torque and Sichuan Jiuniu, all part of the City Football Group, though it is understood that the Citizens will receive most of the £650 million.

Puma chief executive, Bjorn Gulden, spoke on the deal: “Puma’s partnership with City Football Group is the largest deal that we have ever done – both in scope and ambition.

“We are very excited to partner with City Football Group, whose success, ambition and drive for innovation has seen them setting new standards, on and off the field.

“We look forward to building the most innovative partnership in football by redefining the sports partnership model both on and off the pitch.

“We want to maximise on-field performance as well as football culture, in areas such as music, gaming and fashion to connect and inspire the fanbase of each team.”

The deal comes on the heels of City Football Group (CFG) announcing that they had acquired Sichuan Jiuniu, who are based in China. The Chinese market is seen as one with huge potential for both City and Puma and hastened the new kit deal.

The other two members of CFG, New York City FC and Yokohama F. Marinos, are not covered by the deal. The MLS, which New York City are a part of, has a league-wide deal with Adidas, while Yokohama has their own kit deal.

Puma is involved in kit manufacturing all over Europe, with City being the latest high-profile addition to a portfolio that already contains Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Newcastle United, AC Milan, and the Italian national side.

The Citizens are embroiled in a heated title-race with Liverpool, whom they currently trail by one point.
