It’s been one of the most frustratingly comical stories of the season. Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium, which was supposed to be ready for the start of the season, is somehow still not ready to host a football match.

It was supposed to be a ground-breaking season for Tottenham Hotspur. With the team on the rise, a brand new state-of-the-art 62,000 seat stadium which would inspire the hopes and dreams of the generations to come was supposed to drive the club forward this season. Instead, the Spurs stadium’s opening has been delayed, and delayed again, and delayed once more after that, and…you get the point.

The fact is, this delay of the stadium has cast a really poor light on the North London club. It has caused many reschedulings, reshufflings, and no doubt countless headaches not only to club staff, but the ones from other clubs and companies involved as well. Not that it has affected the team too much, as they sit 3rd in the table and are still in a position to challenge in the title race.

With a North London derby at home penciled in for next month, March 2nd, many would have hoped that the stadium would have been ready on time. Imagine, the opening fixture in the grand new stadium against your bitter rivals? Win that match and it would be a memory to last a lifetime for Spurs fans. Alas, we all had the disappointing feeling that it wouldn’t be ready for that spectacle, and the club officially announced exactly that this week.

Pochettino even spoke to the press this week regarding this topic, stating that he hopes Spurs will play in the stadium before the season ends, but thinks it would be “tough”.

So now we must question whether it’s even worth opening the stadium at such a late point in the season. A facility so large and vital for the clubs history deserves a grand opening day, and a late-season Premier League match just wouldn’t do the trick. Spurs should wait till the start of next season to open the stadium properly and give it the display it deserves, and since they’ve already waited this long, they can surely wait another 6 months!

Waiting till the start of next season would reduce the stress of those directly involved in the stadium planning, who I’m sure are on a tight schedule trying to fix and finish everything as fast as they can. It seems that this method has not worked whatsoever, as the delays continue.

Therefore, it would be best for everyone if the club quit teasing their fans and officially announce that the stadium will be opened next season, rather than continuing these inevitable delays.
