Chelsea: Eden Hazard Drops Major Hint at Real Madrid Transfer
After years of flirting with Real Madrid, Eden Hazard has dropped a major hint this week that his future lies at the Bernabeu.
When speaking to RMC’s Belgian correspondent Kristof Terreur, Chelsea’s prized possession Eden Hazard stated that he has “made a decision” regarding his widely-speculated future. This interview is rumoured to have taken place a few months ago, but the information has just been shared recently as it comes from a documentary feature on the Belgian’s career that is released this week.
Hazard has linked himself with Real Madrid in the past, even calling them “the best club in the world” a few months ago, and at 28 years of age, the timing seems right if he really does want this move. It seems strange for Hazard to say he has “decided his future” if that decision involved him staying at Chelsea. If that was the case, he would likely have just come out and said it. This “hint” that he has dropped certainly seems like something transfer related, and it also doesn’t seem like there’s any other destination for him than Real Madrid.
It would be extremely difficult for Chelsea to lose a player as loved and as crucial as Hazard, who is certainly be considered a club legend at this point, at least to some degree. He wouldn’t be sold for cheap, but there truly aren’t many players in world football with his level of influence and ability and Chelsea would struggle mightily to find anyone worthy of filling his boots. With his contract expiring in 2020, and the club currently not competing for the Premier League and not being in the Champions League, it might be very difficult to keep Hazard around.
As for Real Madrid’s side of things, they had been lacking a bit of final-third quality from the left-wing position (which Hazard of course operates in) throughout this season, until very recently when Brazilian teenager Vinicius Jr. started playing at an exceptional level. At just 18 years-of-age however, they would be silly to put too much expectation and trust in him; he has a long way to go yet. Hazard on the other hand, is the finished product that the club needs. He would not replace the output that Cristiano Ronaldo brought to the table, but he would add another world-class attacking threat that they need in order to maintain their status as a European powerhouse.
As one of the top performers in the Premier League and one of the best players in Chelsea’s history, Eden Hazard has won over many fans with his skill, strength, technical quality, and leadership. Although he would be sorely missed in the Premier League, the prospect of playing at Real Madrid is extremely difficult to refuse, especially for someone who seemingly adores the club.
Chelsea are likely to set their asking price to somewhere around £100 million, which is certainly a fair price for someone at his level, and shouldn’t be a problem for Real Madrid.
