Arsenal have had an inconsistent season, but 19-year-old midfield prospect Matteo Guendouzi continues showcase his talent.

It’s been years since Arsenal possessed a midfield prospect that you just knew was special. Perhaps the last one was Jack Wilshere, who was a special talent indeed, but fell victim to his own injury woes. Wilshere is now 27, so it truly has been a while since Arsenal had a midfielder that fell into the “world-class prospect” bracket. Until now.

Frenchman Matteo Guendouzi was brought in by Arsenal this past summer for a mere £7 million, with many expecting him to be a u23 player, be sent on loan, or play a very small part in the first-team squad. After all, he only has about half a season experience in France’s 2nd division and there’s no way a 19-year-old could jump straight to the Premier League from there right? Wrong.

Guendouzi has become a nailed-on starter at Arsenal, as he has amazed fans with his energy, drive, and decision-making. His long, frizzy hair that trails behind him like smoke has become somewhat of a trademark, as he begins to make his name in world football.

Guendouzi has shown that he is a world-class talent in the making, and Arsenal will do well to keep hold of him in the long-run.

The most impressive thing about the French youth international thus far would have to be the confidence he has shown on the pitch, and I think most people who have watched him would agree with me. He has this sort of arrogance about him, which has been beneficial to his development as he hasn’t been scared to go into challenges or make a risky pass. Guendouzi also seems to be a very prominent figure in the Arsenal dressing room, despite being a teenager. The maturity he has displayed this season has been fascinating, as there are little details in his play that you hardly ever see from youngsters, such as high positional and spacial awareness.

If Arsenal do not find a way to rebuild the stature of the club and get back into the Champions League and top 4, they may find themselves barely hanging onto Guendouzi in the future as bigger clubs circle. He is certainly making far more of an impact than he, the club, or the fans could ever have imagined, so this doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon.

In Matteo Guendouzi, Arsenal have a world-class midfield talent that they can build around next to Torreira for years to come. Guendouzi loves to break lines, drive forward, get into battles, and he has already become a fan favourite at the Emirates!
