Everton: Underrated Idrissa Gueye Linked to PSG
Idrissa Gueye has always been an underrated player during his time in England, and now it seems he has finally caught the eye of a big club – PSG.
At 5’9 Idrissa Gana Gueye perhaps doesn’t catch the eye with his vertical presence, but he certainly does with his contributions on the pitch. The Senegalese international has had a modest career but has always been quality for whichever side he suited up for, whether it be Lille, Aston Villa, Everton, or Senegal. His play in the last few seasons especially has been resounding, and his statistics even measure up to a similar player that seems to earn far more plaudits in N’Golo Kante. Now, at the age of 29, it seems that a big club is finally looking towards Gueye to solve an issue in their midfield – Paris St-Germain.
The French giants have reportedly already put in a €25 million bid, but Everton are looking for closer to €40 million. It’s a big gap in price valuations, and this deal will need to be sped up if it is to be completed by the end of the window. Everton will be reluctant to let such a crucial figure of their XI go this late in the window however, with basically no time to find a replacement.
Gueye would be an excellent coup for PSG as a short-term fix, as he brings so much tenacity and energy to the midfield.
The French champions and Champions League-contenders have a bit of an issue at the base of their midfield. In fact, they’ve had this issue for a few years now, or at least ever since Thiago Motta’s form started to slow down. They have been forced to play the likes of Marquinhos and Verratti in that defensive midfield spot, both of whom prefer playing in different positions.
For years, Idrissa Gueye has been one of the most underrated players in the Premier League, to a point where nobody was talking about him despite the fact that he was consistently putting in top performances. He would play a fairly significant short-term role for PSG if the transfer materializes, there is no doubt in my mind. With him slotting in at the base of midfield, Verratti, Di Maria, Draxler, and PSG’s other midfield players would have more license to roam and get forward.
It’s time for Premier League fans to appreciate Idrissa Gueye a little bit more. His play often warrants a big move and the fact that PSG have noticed him means that everyone else should too.
