Electric Dutch youngster Steven Bergwijn has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this week, with the Red Devils in need of wingers.

Marcus Rashford has been a revelation since moving back to his favoured centre-forward position under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Unfortunately, this has caused Manchester United to be understaffed in wide attacking positions, with Jesse Lingard adopting a more central role of late. Excluding Rashford and Lingard, the only wide options Man U have are Anthony Martial and an underwhelming Alexis Sanchez. Even Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are full-time full-backs these days, and can’t be considered for the positions. This has led to rumours that Manchester United are interested in PSV and Netherland’s youngster Steven Bergwijn, according to many sources.

The 21-year-old has lit up the Eredivisie over the past couple seasons, and looks ready for a step up. In 17 matches this season, he has managed a ridiculous 9 goals and 8 assists. He is even accomplished on both flanks, featuring 13 times at left wing, putting up 5 goals and 6 assists, and 10 times at right wing, putting up 4 goals and 3 assists. At his age, that is a very promising sign.

As PSV are in the thick of a title race, Bergwijn won’t be allowed to leave in this window, but a summer move seems to be on the cards.

Every club in the world would be reluctant to sell a player midway through a season, which is exactly why the January transfer window is a bit less engaging than its Summer counterpart. There is absolutely no way PSV will allow Bergwijn to move on this month as they are currently neck-and-neck with arch-rivals Ajax for the Eredivisie crown. However, it’s likely that Bergwijn will move on in the summer with so much interest towards him.

He would likely slot in at right-wing for United, as they really don’t have a natural player for that position and have been trying to shoehorn Mata and Rashford onto that side for a few years now, to no avail. United will likely have to battle Spurs and both Milan sides if they are to get their hands on the player, although you would fancy them in that battle.

Bergwijn would represent another brilliant young attacker for Man U to build their squad around for years to come. All 3 of Martial, Rashford, and Bergwijn are U23 and play in the 3 main attacking positions: left-wing, centre-forward, and right-wing respectively. What a talented spearhead that would be if they can get the deal done this summer.
