The announcement of manager David Wagner’s departure came as a big surprise. Yet, the reasoning was justified. Huddersfield was in need of something fresh.

The team sitting at the very bottom of the English Premier League table fits predictions as if the suit was tailor-made. Strange enough, the Terriers sit so low without even being deemed the most conceding team in the league. However, their goalscoring record tops the chats this season.

In 22 games played Wagner’s men only managed to score 13 goals. This stat has helped them collect only 11 points, this because they secured the most losses (15) in the Premier League this run. We can argue the point all day that if this was not David Wagner, any other manager would have seen the exit doors a lot sooner.

This is where you could see tons of respect was held for the manager by the club’s board and fans. Not many complained about the results and acknowledged loads of bad luck took part in their misfortunes with results. However, there’s only so much leniency they can show and so much love they can give, even if he was the man who got their club to where they are, which is in is the Premier League.

Was the right time now?

Already surpassing the middle stages of the Premier League and having only obtained 11 points so far, Huddersfield has left themselves quite the up heel climb. The next team (Fulham) ahead of them sits three points adrift them. The team (Newcastle) thereafter sits seven points aloft from them and the spot they must reach for safety is eight points away, which is occupied by Cardiff City.

Not impossible, but having faced most of the teams fighting for the drop, gives them little to almost no chance to determine their own fate. Against Cardiff, Burnley, Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle, Wagner only picked up one point. That’s one point from 15, in matches that were must wins and relegation battles.

Some of the names being mentioned as a possible successor for David Wagner

The time was actually long overdue and something that had to be done by the club. If the club’s statement is true about them reaching a mutual agreement with Wagner, then good on both parties for coming to their full senses. Their Top Flight status was at risk because of loyalty.

Yes, it was good to see, however, the Terriers are not in a position to ride things out or stay true. They are in need of a change and a change was meant to be made. As stated by the club, the caretaker coach will be Mark Hudson from the U19/EDT Coach at Huddersfield Town.

Wagner’s chances of another job are extremely high. He could wait for another head coach opening. Or, he could join up with his best buddy and do what they did best… Loads of damage together.
