Chelsea: Losing Cesc Fabregas was a blow for Premier League football
How sad was that long walk to an end of an illustrious English career. Safe to say all watching in felt for the Spaniard, as he took part in his last game in English competition.
Sad but true. Coming for a long time but still a tough pill to swallow. A man that’s brought us some memorable for both London clubs he played for (Arsenal and Chelsea) but it was time for Chelsea to make way for younger talent, who suits the Sarri way.
Fabregas leaves the Stamford Bridge side at the age of 31-years-old. This after it was confirmed he will join up with his former Gunner mate, Thierry Henry. The two will pair up in France in an aid to revive the sleeping giant that is Monaco.
It’s no secret Henry has had sleepless times at the French club since joining in the early part of the season. Nothing has gone right for the Frenchman and that’s why it comes as no surprise players like Cesc Fabregas is said to be on route.
His time at Chelsea
During the reign of Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge, Fabregas was a constant figure for the Italian manager. He played a huge role in the Premier League winning campaign and was always on call when needed.
He was used as a game changer and a player who could lead Chelsea all the way to three points. Before the season kicked off and the club announced the arrival of Maurizio Sarri, the Spaniard’s chances became less and less.
During Conte’s time at the club Fabregas featured a bulky amount 155 games. Through the course of this time he tallied 19 goals and 49 assists in both the English Premier League and European competitions. The latter stat emphasises on Cesc’s most extensive talent and that’s being a master of the art of passing.
The Spanish midfielder’s best contribution came in their Premier League winning campaign. Double figures of 12 were reached in that season alone, so you can understand some of the difficulty trying to understand why Sarri is unable to fit Cesc somewhere in the centre of the park.
Though, it does make sense in other ways.
We all are well aware age is more than just a number in the game of football. At his age of 31-years-old, he has reached the latter stages of his career. This counts heavily against him with all or most managers of the game leaning towards more athletic and obviously younger.
This has eliminated the mid man to an embarrassing low of 11 appearances. With his chances limited so has his contribution towards Chelsea’s goals decreased. Only managing two assists with no goals, justifies the player moving on.
Henry also needs his old teammate more than the English Premier League needs him. His passing range will be sadly missed. But it will be an interesting ending to Monaco’s fighting campaign. It is said ex-Real Madrid defender Pepe might follow Cesc to Monaco. Even more interesting news.
