It was almost only two English clubs with tickets to the Round of 16. However, the final two, Liverpool and Tottenham hit hot form at the right time.

The fear had all worried. But a favour here and an outstanding job done there – allowed both clubs to grab those wildcard tickets and claim their rightful spots in the Round of 16. You could breeze through your group stages as City did after a small stumble. You could battle from Matchday 1 till Matchday 6 as the Reds and Spurs did.

But we all know – The Round of 16 is when the tournament really kicks off.

The final 16 reach the demanding stages of home and away fixtures. No room for exercising your full squad. If you lucky enough and have all the talent in the world, you riding high – but we all know not even that’s enough to get yourself that Champions League gold medal.

Round of 16 fixtures involving English teams (UEFA Champions League)

Manchester United vs. PSG (12th February)
Tottenham vs. Dortmund (13th February)
Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich (19th February)
Schalke vs. Manchester City (20th February)

Liverpool would have been labelled drastic failures if they were to not go beyond the group stages after their amazing feet of last season, as runners-up. Much has changed since then. Some teams are after this cup alone and others after domestic glory.

We know who of the four will be hounding down this cup. Think it’s safe to say both Manchester clubs want this and need this, altogether. Spurs just want silverware.

Next. The draw for the final four in EFL Cup. dark

Talking about all trying to make the finals in Wanda Metropolitano, will Real Madrid make the trip to Madrid? The other side of Madrid, yo. Not sure, as they are nowhere near the excellence of last season and what they coming up against in the remainder of the tournament are looking a better brand than the previous champions.

Manchester City waltz through, followed by United, who had a stop and start but an assured promotion to the next round. Whereas the last two English clubs, Liverpool and Tottenham made a meal of things – even though they had all the chances to take control of their own fait, with no stress at a time in the Champions League group stages.
