EFL Cup: Tottenham impressive against Arsenal in North London derby
From the first whistle to the final whistle the ball was knocked around on both ends of the pitch. Spurs revenge sweet, after this first derby went the Gunners way inside the Emirates.
With the result and the performance all in Mauricio’s favour, you can believe the Lilywhites are after the glory of this cup. After failure in the league, well not failure but unmanageable efforts to keep up with the race, these neighbours need to look for silverware elsewhere.
This is that place.
After the last meeting in the league entertained with a six-goal thriller, we were sure this one was going to attract more of the same. However, only one team was sure in front of goal. That team was Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.
Recap of the quaterfinals matchup
Arsenal were second best for more majority of the game. Yes, they saw most of the ball with 55 percent of the possession – but this came with no effect on the game, after failing to put the ball at the back of the net with only two shots on target from the 14 shots taken at Gazzaniga’s goalmouth.
The visitors were led by the trustworthy Son, who put away the first of the game in the 20th minute. They were the more efficient of the two with only nine attempts and three of them being on target. Between the opener and the start of the second half, it appeared as if the Unai’s men were getting back into the game and came close to equalising. Although, in a stroke of brilliance against the run of play, Spurs were allowed to double their advantage through a well-placed finish by Dele Alli.
A beautiful goal to take the game away from the hosts.
It was far from over but Tottenham stuck to the gameplan and saw out a clean sheet and a great two-goal victory over their rivals in an important match for an empty trophy cabnite needing to be filled. One trots on and the other must get back to basics again.
Sets a different tone for both North London sides
That’s two defeats for the Emirate’s side in as many games. Whereas their neighbouring rivals have been on the climb – going unbeaten since the last North London meeting between the two sides. The time of December can be festive for some and not for others.
For the Gunners it hasn’t been too festive. A great run of 22 games unbeaten seized by a new look Saints. This was followed by their next quest, the Carabao Cup.
