One person who won’t be feeling the Christmas cheer is Mark Hughes, the well-travelled (now former) Southampton manager.

Despite hanging on to a 2-2 draw at home to the oft-hapless Manchester United, the Welshman received the sack. This is a direct result of poor form in the English Premier League’s opening weeks, a time in which Southampton picked up a mere 9 points.

Their sole win came against equally, toothless Palace and that was three months ago; 6 draws account for the rest of their miserable points tally. All this comes despite a sizeable overhaul of the squad in the summer window, since when Hughes had been creditably backed by the board.

Now however, his time at St Mary’s is up. No longer a Saint, Hughes will be hoping to stay off Santa’s naughty list – and potentially yet another mid-season appointment.
