Carabao Cup: Premier League Third Round Results
By Orri Benatar
The third round of the Carabao Cup was crazy from start to finish. Shocks and close games kept us occupied for the past two days.
With Southampton and Everton’s third round Carabao Cup tie set for next week, 14 Premier League teams were in action on Tuesday and Wednesday to try and advance in the Carabao Cup. Some did well while others didn’t in what was a surprisingly epic two days of football from a competition people seem to neglect sometimes. Here is how it went down.
Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea
The first match of Liverpool-Chelsea week went to Maurizio Sarri and the Blues as they handed Liverpool their first loss of the season. Daniel Sturridge scored the opener on a wide open scissor kick in the 58th minute. Chelsea then brought in the big guns and it changed at Anfield. Emerson got his first Chelsea goal and then Eden Hazard dashed through and scored a beautiful winner.
Man United 2-2 Derby County (Derby on PENS)
The match of the week was at Old Trafford where Derby County shocked Manchester United amidst all the turmoil between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba. Pogba was in the stands and witnessed a Harry Wilson free-kick from the top drawer, Sergio Romero’s sending off and two more goals in the second half. Derby would then win the shootout 8-7 after 18 penalties total, giving Frank Lampard a managerial win over his former boss.
Tottenham 2-2 Watford (Spurs on PENS)
Stadium MK was the site of Tottenham and Watford’s second game of the year and it lived up to all the expectations. Watford was up 1-0 after 81 minutes and the three goals in the last eight minutes took the match to a penalty shootout. Dele Alli, a native of Milton Keynes and former MK Dons star scored the winning penalty and sent Spurs to the fourth round.
Oxford Utd 0-3 Man City
The reigning Carabao Cup champions had no issues at Kassam Stadium against Oxford United. Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez both scored excellent goals and the day ended with Phil Foden getting his first-ever goal for Manchester City. City will hold the mantle of Manchester’s only club left in the competition as they look to defend the title with some of their youngsters like Foden.
