English Premier League: Power Rankings after five matches
By Orri Benatar
Matchday six is approaching and before we get down to the business, here are how the teams rank in the EPL power rankings.
Last Result: L 0-1 at. Wolverhampton Wanderers
Next Week: SAT vs. Bournemouth & TUE at. Burton Albion
It’s amazing how quickly things can change for a team. One look and Burnley was approaching a Europa League spot. Now, they are bottom of the Premier League and on a four-game losing streak. Nothing has been working for Sean Dyche and The Clarets and they will need to fix it up and fast. Playing at home will help but Bournemouth has been impressive this season.
Last Result: L 1-2 vs. Arsenal
Next Week: SAT at. Crystal Palace
The Magpies four losses are all against top six clubs. That draw against Cardiff (which should have been a win) is the only reason they don’t have zero points after five games. Newcastle finally gets a break from playing the best in the league and could steal a point or three on the road. The key will be getting Jonjo Shelvey and Salomon Rondon more involved.
Last Result: L 0-1 vs. Crystal Palace
Next Week: SAT at. Leicester City
Huddersfield is the only team in the Premier League with less than three goals. Philip Billing’s goal against Everton is the only meaningful one for the Terriers. This attack is the weakest in the league and must improve to stay up. The chances of it improving are low but hey, at least the defense isn’t that awful.
Last Result: L 1-4 at. Chelsea
Next Week: SAT vs. Manchester City
The Bluebirds stout defense has been cut apart by Arsenal and Chelsea in their last two games. After conceding only two goals in their first three matches, Cardiff City has given up seven in the last two losses to Arsenal and Chelsea. That run is likely to continue at home against Man City in what will likely be a third straight loss.
Last Result: W 3-1 at. Everton
Next Week: SUN vs. Chelsea & WED vs. Macclesfield Town
The Hammers showed what they can do when they beat Everton and the win hops them up to 16th in the rankings. Andriy Yarmolenko, Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic make a good partnership up top and can score lots of goals this season. Sunday’s match against Chelsea will be tough but West Ham proved they can get wins against the lower opposition. That is if their attack plays every week like that.
