English Premier League: Matchday three predictions
By Orri Benatar
For the third week in a row, we have a top-six encounter. It’s saved for Monday as matchday three looms in the Premier League.
My predictions from matchday two improved a little bit compared to the first weekend. I went from four correct matches to six. Marginal improvement but an improvement. My biggest prophetic moment was having City score six goals against Huddersfield. My worst pick was Newcastle beating Cardiff 3-1.
The third matchday has some big headlines. We have the reigning EPL and EFL Championship winners matching up, two zero point London clubs trying to get into a groove, and a top-six encounter at Old Trafford. To hear picks and more on the weekend, check out the latest episode of the Top Flight Podcast.
Wolves 0-3 Man City
City isn’t playing a top-six side until October. When they meet Liverpool on October 7th, it’s likely they will be perfect. The champions roll on.
Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
The Gunners are the best team without a point after two games. They will get all three of them at home against a West Ham side struggling to find an identity.
Bournemouth 1-1 Everton
Two of the hottest teams in the country right now. Im thinking a draw at the Vitality. Bournemouth’s defense will contain Richarlison while Callum Wilson stays hot.
Huddersfield 0-1 Cardiff City
Neil Etheridge is going to continue his meteoric rise for the Bluebirds and keep another clean sheet. Cardiff will also score their first goal against the worst team in the league.
Southampton 1-2 Leicester
Leicester has some ringers in James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira. Southampton is lacking ringers in the whole squad. 2-1 to the Foxes in Puel’s return to St. Mary’s.
Liverpool 3-0 Brighton
Liverpool beat Brighton 9-1 on aggregate in the two games last season. The hurt continues for the Seagulls against the Reds at Anfield.
Watford 2-2 Crystal Palace
One team that is playing free-flowing and another that is tactically disciplined. I think this match will be the best game of the weekend. 2-2 at Vicarage Road.
Fulham 2-0 Burnley
The Cottagers will win their first EPL match this season against a Burnley team that needs a hug and some Gatorade. Lost to Watford 3-1 on Sunday and lost to Olympiacos 3-1 yesterday in Athens.
Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea
Newcastle doesn’t have a right-back. Chelsea has many fullbacks and defenders that cause problems on both ends of the pitch. Chelsea remains perfect at St. James’ Park.
Man United 1-0 Tottenham
The game of the week pits a down in the dumps Man United against a perfect Spurs. Mourinho and United are known to bounce back after a bad loss. He does just that at home in a defensive match. Here is how it went down last time out in the league between these two.
