English Premier League: Power Rankings after matchday one
By Orri Benatar
Last Result: W 2-1 at. Newcastle United
Next Week: SAT vs. Fulham
First, I like the aqua kits! Had to get that out of the way. Spurs played a common line-up from 2017-18 and got the three points against Newcastle. The low point was Harry Kane’s yellow and his August scoring curse still continuing. A final match at Wembley against Fulham will be a way to get even more momentum approaching the new stadium opener against Liverpool. Spurs lose Son to the Asian Games for a bit, but that shouldn’t be a problem.
Last Result: W 2-1 vs. Leicester City
Next Week: SUN at. Brighton and Hove Albion
United wasn’t amazing against Leicester. Good enough for a win, but once again lacking creativity. They are fourth on this list because of Paul Pogba’s above average performance in a United shirt and David De Gea making key saves after a terrible World Cup. Mourinho needs to step up the tactics and get some more creativity out of his players, especially Alexis Sanchez.
Last Result: W 2-0 at. Arsenal
Next Week: SUN vs. Huddersfield Town
The champions won and showed why they are who they are. Even without Kevin De Bruyne, City’s midfield and attack were ruthless and created space to get shots off. A big negative in the game was Ederson. I can’t recall a keeper having that many passing errors in the back and somehow still keeping a clean sheet. He can thank his defenders and Arsenal’s poor finishing for that.
Last Result: W 3-0 at. Huddersfield Town
Next Week: SAT vs. Arsenal
Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea had some bright moments in their 3-0 win at John Smith’s Stadium. N’Golo Kante and Jorginho looked like a midfield duo to be feared and Chelsea’s four at the back was new but worked. It was not much of a test. Arsenal is a big upgrade to Huddersfield and I think Chelsea can conquer the challenge. They just need their strikers to score goals.
Last Result: W 4-0 vs. West Ham United
Next Week: MON at. Crystal Palace
Liverpool was magnificent against West Ham. Mo Salah and Sadio Mane picked up right where they left off, and the wingbacks continue to be a terror and look like the most mature players on the pitch. Furthermore, Alisson and Naby Keita take this team to another level.
It was a perfect day for Liverpool. New players shined bright, stars scored, and Daniel Sturridge returned with a goal. This team should be feared not just in England, but in all of Europe.
