English Premier League: Power Rankings after matchday one
By Orri Benatar
Last Result: L 0-2 vs. Manchester City
Next Week: SAT at. Chelsea
The Gunners are the only top-six side without a win after the first weekend. They had flashes of a new and better Arsenal against the reigning champions, but overall, they just could not break down Man City. Lacazette missed some chances, Cech’s passing out of the back was terrible, and Arsenal had far better players sitting on the bench than the ones that started. It’s a long season for Unai Emery, who now gets to go to the Bridge.
Last Result: L 1-2 at. Manchester United
Next Week: SAT vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers
The first game for Leicester in the post-Mahrez era wasn’t too bad. Even without Jamie Vardy starting, Leicester was able to create some chances and could have gotten a draw against United. James Maddison was excellent on the ball and had space to score while Demarai Gray was lightning on the wings. Vardy got the goal, but this team doesn’t look like they will need to rely on him to score.

Last Result: L 1-2 vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Next Week: SAT at. Cardiff City
Newcastle could have won this game. They hit the post early in the second-half and Rondon had a deflection go off the bar. The Magpies had a good opening game to start the season and have a great chance to get a win at Cardiff next Saturday. Rafa Benitez will work his magic again for this team that has potential to surprise.
Last Result: D 0-0 vs. Burnley
Next Week: SAT at. Everton
The Saints had a couple of opportunities to score against Burnley at Turf Moor. They did, however, have less than their opposition. Most of their chances came from set-pieces rather than in open play. Losing Dusan Tadic will do that to a team. The Saints will have to find ways to score goals, especially against an Everton team without Phil Jagielka.
Last Result: D 0-0 at. Southampton
Next Week: THU vs. Istanbul Basaksehir (Europa) & SUN vs. Watford
Burnley’s second straight 0-0 draw could have been a 1-0 win against the Saints. Burnley had more positives after the final whistle than Southampton. Joe Hart got a clean sheet and made key saves, giving Claret fans some hope after Nick Pope’s early injury. They seem to have some sting in their attack and they aren’t knackered with Europa League play. They go again this week with a game Thursday and Sunday.
