The first Saturday of the season is in the books with many more to follow. Most of the newly-promoted teams struggled while Chelsea and Spurs sealed three points.
Newcastle 1-2 Tottenham
A wild first half started with an early set-piece for Spurs resulting in the first goal of the day. A back post header by Jan Vertonghen hit off the bar and was confirmed by goal-line technology. The ball crossed the line by 9mm. Newcastle immediately responded when Joselu headed in the equalizer just two minutes later.
Spurs regained the lead eight minutes after Joselu’s header. Dele Alli received a Serge Aurier cross and headed in the go-ahead goal, his 38th in the Premier League. The second half was back and forth with great saves and great chances for both teams. The best came in the 85th minute when Salomon Rondon had a shot deflect off the crossbar.
Spurs earn the three points in their aqua jerseys to start the season. Harry Kane continues his August curse with no goals and a yellow card. Newcastle walks away with the loss and an injury as DeAndre Yedlin left late with an apparent knee injury.
