EPL: Liverpool, Juventus, and Benfica win ICC matches on east coast
By Orri Benatar
The International Champions Cup continued with a great Wednesday of action with three games on the east coast of the United States.
There was plenty of goals and drama in Philly, Pittsburgh, and East Rutherford. The first three matches of Wednesday in the ICC featured some of the biggest clubs in Europe beginning or continuing their preseasons. Here is how it went down.
Juventus 2-0 Bayern Munich
The Italian champions comfortably took care of the German champions in a rainy Philadelphia. Bayern’s defense was opened up quickly and made mistakes at the back to lead to the two goals for Juventus.
Former Serie B striker Andrea Favilli scored both to earn the three points. The first goal came after Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich kept the ball in play after a terrible back pass. The second was a breakaway, finese finish past Ulreich. Bayern’s final ICC match will be in Miami against Man City. Juventus head to New York to face Benfica.
Dortmund 2-2 (3-4p) Benfica
Borussia Dortmund could not end the ICC with three wins out of three, despite having a 2-0 lead at the break. Young striker Max Phillip scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half. Benfica roared back in the second 45. Andre Almeida converted in the 51st minute and his teammate, Alfa Semedo, equalized in the 69th minute to eventually take the match to penalties.
Benfica would win the shootout by converting four of their five penalties, kicking second after Dortmund. Despite the shootout loss, Dortmund earned one point while Benfica earned two. Dortmund remains at the top of the table with seven points to end the ICC. Benfica goes to New York to play Juventus on Saturday.
Man City 1-2 Liverpool
The second half was full of action as first-team stars such as Leroy Sane, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah all came into the game. Sane used his pace to make a great run on the left flank and finished with a great strike to the far post to give Man City the lead.
Mo Salah came into the match in the 61st minute and scored in the 62nd minute. He headed in a cross from Rafael Camacho to equalize. He might have been offside but with no VAR, it stood.
The match looked set for penalties until Dominic Solanke was fouled in the box in stoppage time by Tosin Adarabioyo. Sadio Mane stepped up and scored the penalty past Joe Hart for the late winner. Liverpool’s win means Man City will go to Miami on Saturday with 0 points in two matches.
Salah and Mane’s scoring gives Liverpool three points in their second match of the ICC. Their final contest will be at The Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They will take on Manchester United on Saturday in what is expected to be a packed house at the University of Michigan.
