Liverpool’s move to sign goalkeeper Alisson for a world-record fee shows their ambition to compete and fix a long-term problem.
Liverpool has agreed on a fee to sign goalkeeper Alisson Becker from Roma. Liverpool will pay £66.8m for the Brazilian and make him the most expensive goalkeeper ever.
The goalkeeping situation at Liverpool has been one of the talking points for a while. With Simon Mignolet losing his spot as the starting keeper in all competitions, Loris Karius hasn’t been able to deliver consistently, and his performances let many Liverpool fans down.
Most notably, the German goalkeeper had two howlers on Liverpool’s Champions League defeat against Real Madrid in the final and it appears he has lost all his confidence and mental strength.
Alisson had been linked with Liverpool for some time and was subject of an unsuccessful inquiry back in January. As it seems, Jürgen Klopp is throwing the money to strengthen a position that has been one of the team’s weak-links.
This is a very similar situation to when Virgil Van Dijk joined Liverpool. Klopp saw the Dutchman as the perfect man to fit into Liverpool’s defence and paid the asked price, making him the most expensive defender of all time.
Liverpool’s stance regarding Alisson appears to be similar. The fact that Liverpool went back for him after a failed inquiry in January showed the interest was genuine and the Brazilian is seen as the missing piece of the jigsaw.
Let’s take a look at Alisson’s profile and what he brings to Liverpool.
