In maybe the most dramatic finish to a group so far, Sweden’s 3-0 thrashing of Mexico left the door open for Germany to clinch a spot in the knockout round. But in the end South Korea saved Mexico and the reigning champions finish last in the group.

Germany, the reigning World Cup champions, have been eliminated. Die Mannschaft had a golden opportunity to take revenge on Mexico by scoring a goal and advancing over them on the final day, but despite every opportunity it was the Koreans that eventually found a goal in extra time, eliminating Germany. Sweden ends up on top of the group on goal difference after having their way with Mexico, who also advance on six points.

Best Game: Mexico 1-0 Germany

When Mexico opened their tournament by beating the reigning champions Germany, they shocked both the world and themselves. At the final whistle, the elated Mexican players were greeted by the roar of their multitude of fans in Moscow who got to see their team beat Germany at the World Cup for the first time ever.

Most Memorable Moment: South Korea eliminate the champions

Germany threw the kitchen sink at South Korea in the final match of the group stage, knowing that even a one-goal victory would seize them the final spot in qualification. But the Koreans withstood a barrage of chances, and finally had a breakthrough of their own when Toni Kroos’ back pass found Young-Gwon Kim in front of the net in extra time. What followed was absolute madness.

Best Player: Guillermo Ochoa

As much credit as the outfield players deserved for beating Germany, without Ochoa in goal the first game, the whole tournament could’ve ended very differently for Mexico. The veteran shot-stopper saved Mexico time after time both against Germany and South Korea, and no other player was more important to their team in this group.

Best Goal: Toni Kroos vs Sweden

No surprises here. Kroos’ strike was one of the most dramatic moments of the tournament so far, and it just about saved Germany’s chances to advance. Kroos is a world-class player, and this was a world-class finish.
