World Cup: Roberto Martinez has lost his mind with his squad selection
I have no words to describe the baffling thoughts of disbelieve and astonishing news that one of Belgium’s most consistent midfielder will miss Russia 2018.
Think we asking the incorrect question when asking, what was Roberto Martinez thinking leaving out Radja Nainggolan, of the Belgium squad? Think the question should be, was Roberto Martinez thinking when leaving Radja Nainggolan out for the tournament?
A unanimous decision of ‘Martinez lost the plot syndrome’ has been diagnosed by me. I am no doctor but I do no madness when I see it and right here – it’s as live as Jason Statham in the movie Crank.
This has left quite a hole in the middle of the park for Belgium. Taking Marouane Fellaini over a Champions League semifinalist has its question marks, and rightfully so. Fellaini was either overlooked on more occasions than his season prior to 2017-2018. Or was sidelined due to injury.
God alone has the answer to what Martinez is doing
Only managing to feature 16 time during Man United’s Premier League campaign, compared to Nainggolan’s 28 games in the Serie A, emphasises on the mental decision made by a controversial choice of management for the Belgium squad.
What counts against this argument – is the two accumulated the same amount of goals during their particular leagues. Does this claim the United midfielder is far more effective when playing and says the Roma man is less of an asset?
In no way possible. The work rate of the mohawk man is second to none. A prime example is their Champions League stunner when they shocked Europe and knocked out Barcelona.
Missing for the first leg, Barcelona took the advantage with them on their travels to Roma, only to face a fit Nainggolan, who was ever-present on the pitch. He was instrumental to the Italian side’s victory in the second leg and semifinal second leg, where they unfortunately couldn’t pull off another miracle against Liverpool.
Reason to quite his duty on the international scene?
Reports add to the story by saying the long-range goalscorer will retire from international football after losing his place at the World Cup. I would certainly do the same as him. To lose out after looking at the list of players who made Roberto’s list – I would not want to play for the man myself.
Next: English midfield – A missing person since 1966
A midfield partnership of, him, Kevin de Bruyne and Mousa Dembele, or Axel Witsel has a far better look than that of them and Fellaini. At the age of 30-years-old, he will be 34 when the next world event takes place, and 32 when they challenge at Euro 2020.
It’s hands down the right decision to be made by the player himself. Sad news for Belgium and for those who see him as a star on the footballing stage.
