Due to Arsenal’s poor season, there are more candidates for the prestigious worst player of the year award than usual.

In a year where the Gunners were subpar in the defensive aspect of their game, many defenders will be blamed. Shkodran Mustafi has no excuse for his poor season. Petr Cech is in his mid-30’s and Laurent Koscielny has a recurring Achilles issue. Mustafi should be entering his prime and taking advantage of his physicality, but instead, he is continuously showing off his poor defending intelligence.

Mustafi looks a mere shade of the 21-year-old World Cup winner who looked like he could blossom into a top defender just four years ago. His international career is also clearly declining with him being left out of the Germany 2018 World Cup squad, and his reputation has taken a sky-dive in the past season.
