Hang onto Hazard, or adapt

The Belgian playmaker is far and away the best player at Chelsea. Unfortunately, he may not be there for long.

Eden Hazard has long been Chelsea’s trump card. The magical playmaker’s balance, poise, and sheer technical wizardry make him a nightmare for defenses, and when things are not going the Blues’ way, he is the man they turn to. If, as expected, Chelsea do not qualify for the Champions League for next year, it may be the last we see of Hazard in a blue shirt.

Real Madrid has been longtime admirers of the Belgian, and with Karim Benzema struggling this season, the Spanish side is looking to rework their forward line. The allure of Madrid will be too much for Hazard to resist.

If Chelsea cannot hang onto him, they will have to adapt. Rumors are swirling of a swap deal with Madrid, which would send Hazard and Gareth Bale in opposite directions. It would be a positive step for the Blues if this were to materialize if Bale can overcome his history of injuries. The lack of Champions League football makes such a signing much more difficult.

Chelsea have to promote from within. Players like Willian will have to step up, or risk being left behind. Perhaps one of Chelsea’s many loanees can rise up to take the torch from Hazard. It is a tough ask, but it is a bridge that Chelsea will have to cross sooner rather than later.
