In a shock announcement on Friday, the news that has half of the Arsenal fanbase ecstatic and the other half devastated has been confirmed; manager Arsene Wenger will resign come the end of the season.
The 68-year-old Frenchmen leaves after an astonishing 22 year reign at the North London club, having joined in 1996, as an unknown in English football. He will leave at the end of the 2017-18 campaign as a man who conquered almost everything in the English game.
His name will forever be synonymous with Arsenal. From 1996 onwards, he radically changed the club from the ground up to revolutionise English football at a time when the Premier League was in its infancy.
His 704 Premier League victories at a win rate of 57% puts him just behind the great Alex Ferguson in the all time list of games won. Having won three Premier Leagues and seven FA Cups, he leaves as one of the most decorated managers in English History.
This showcases the importance of Wenger and how well he has done at the club, he helped build to the top and eventually, almost broke back down. Luckily for all the Gunners – his decision was made at a good time.
