Sergio Aguero

At the other end of the pitch, Sergio Aguero got into the team of the year for the first time in his career. It took him seven seasons. It’s staggering that this is the season he got in on, considering this campaign was full of great attackers. Some of those were his teammates in Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling. For once, he hasn’t been relied upon solely for the source of goals.

I don’t think there’s any doubt that overall, Aguero deserved a mention. It does seem like it’s for this reason that his fellow professionals have deemed it fit to vote for him this season specifically.

A lot of people, mainly Liverpool fans, are citing Roberto Firmino’s season as better than Aguero’s. To answer this, Firmino’s biggest problem is that he plays a supporting role, which enables others to take the spotlight. This is a good example of what people talk about when they mention terms like unselfish work and unsung hero

Missing out on these accolades kind of comes with the territory. You can firmly count Fernandinho in the same category as Firmino in this regard. Maybe the PFA just hate names that start with F and end with eenio.

Overall, the team does reflect the story of the year with so many Man City players being included. In the short-term, players like Otamendi and Alonso might face a bit of criticism. In ten years’ time, all it will say in the history books is that they made it in.

It’s a good reminder that awards are nice, but they don’t actually mean anything. With that said, let’s GET HYPED for the Player of the Year award!
