Liverpool: Danny Ward to start tonight against Leicester in the Carabao Cup
Liverpool have three keepers of first team quality. Only two keepers have seen game time this season and tonight, we’ll see Danny Ward for the first time since preseason.
The Welshman has been third choice since being told he will not be loaned out to Klopp’s compatriot and Huddersfield manager, David Wagner. It was always known that Ward would serve as a goalkeeper for cup competition.
However this should not limit the keeper, for there’s lots of weaknesses in the LFC backline and no matter what he should be considered as, first, second, or third. He should be taking every chance he gets to become first choice.
Speaking at the press conference ahead of tonight’s game, the Liverpool manage confirmed that Ward will start between the sticks tonight.
Reading the express the manager had this to say at the press conference:
"“I’m not sure the world is ready for such a crazy decision, a third goalkeeper in one season.“Danny Ward will play tomorrow.“Importance is same as every,” he said. “100 per cent focus on that game. Big competition, I don’t care how people see it.”"
Klopp understands the decision to use Ward could come across as strange but wants the squad to be used to it’s full potential, until the right formula can be found for the below par defence.
After the news hit that Ward would be chosen for the keeper role tonight the young player spoke out about the job at hand and how he’s ready for the push in search of the number one sport.
The Liverpool Echo reported him saying:
"The three of us go about our business and work hard. We all know the situation – there is only one shirt and one place in the team.“It’s very different to any other position on the pitch and we know we’re all fighting for one place. It’s healthy competition, which is going to improve all of us.“We all do the same training and we push each other on in training. Mentally, you’ve got to keep yourself prepared and be ready for the chance when it comes around.“Keep going in training and don’t let your standards drop, even if the chances are you’re not going to be involved at the weekend.“You’ve got to try to keep intact and wait for your chance to come around.“It doesn’t just benefit you – it benefits the lads who are around you as well. Ultimately, the three of us have got to try to produce the best goalkeeper that we can, along with John [Achterberg], to give Liverpool the best goalkeeper we can possibly have for the season.”“I’m good to go!”"
The third choice keeper has the right attitude to become first choice for the club. Tonight’s display will be pivotal in his quest for regular first team football.

All of Liverpool’s keepers are young and have all the time to improve on and off the pitch. There is no rush but the changing of goalkeeper could prove to be a problem in the end.
