Wing Backs

Playing a 3-4-3, the team needs two offensive wing backs to get forward and give the team some attacking impetus. Unfortunately, we could only get one of those, but we’ll just have to make do.

Branislav Ivanovic has looked particularly poor this season. Ivanovic is 32 years old, but he’s been playing like he’s ten years older. In his prime, Ivanovic would have been perfect as a wing back. Using his pace, power and natural instincts to drive forward and help the team attack.

Unfortunately, that Ivanovic doesn’t seem to exist anymore. Hull’s Ahmed Elmohamady likes to burst forward from full back, but the Egyptian is suspended for this game. Which means we have no choice but to switch Cesar Azpilicueta over and field him on the right-hand side.

The Spaniard offers no attacking impetus whatsoever, but when the pickings are slim, you get what you get. At least the left back is going to get forward and give the team some width. Andrew Robertson gets the nod a left back.

Robertson enjoys pushing forward but also stays true to his defensive duties. Marcos Alonso could have been selected but the Spanish full back has only appeared in one Premier League game for his new club.
