A cloud of uncertainty surrounds the England national team following their stunning defeat to Iceland, which resulted in Roy Hodgson’s resignation.
Some questioned why Hodgson was still in charge of the national team following England’s poor showing at the World Cup in Brazil two years ago. Given the chance to see out his contract, a strong performance at Euro 2016 was the only way Hodgson would receive an extension.
We could talk for days about how poorly the national team has been run, and not just from Hodgson’s end. Why Greg Dyke, chairman of the English Football Association, was publicly discussing what Hodgson needed to do in order to earn a new contract in the middle of the Euros was just bizarre. Talk about a distraction.
England fans’ fears from 2012 have come true. When Hodgson was appointed as manager, many pointed to his failed reign at Liverpool and questioned whether he would be able to handle the international stage. Hodgson can be proud of his excellent qualifying results. Fans will look where it counts, in the tournaments.
