Lessons From the Weekend: Premier League Week 8
Lesson #2 – The Premier League claims its first scalp in Brendan Rodgers
The first managerial sacking of the 2015-16 season goes to (former) Liverpool gaffer, Brendan Rodgers.
The first sacking last season wasn’t until after Christmas when Crystal Palace sacked Neil Warnock on December 27th.
There aren’t a whole lot of lessons to learn here other than if you spend close to £300 million over three seasons you need to show more than a second place finish.
Many pundits were surprised that Rodgers was sacked so abruptly, but is it really that surprising? Transfer market aside there were a number of nails in Rodgers’ coffin that led to his sacking. Most glaringly, the free-flowing attack that Liverpool had enjoyed in the 2013-14 Premier League had fallen away and the team grew increasingly risk averse. This is probably one of the root causes for Liverpool having a below average goals conceded ratio and poor form against bottom half Premier League teams.
We also learned that a 19-year-old shortstop for the Colorado Rockies is not Liverpool’s manager.
Of course you’re not, you just got sacked.
