Whenever Jose Mourinho faced off against Wenger we weren’t bereft of controversies may it be a shove on the sideline or calling someone a failure on national television.

But one phenomenon was constant which was, Wenger never got the better of his Portuguese rival. With a win over Chelsea, Wenger can now breathe easy and head into the new season with a win over his arch enemy.

Wenger’s Arsenal looked like a team with renewed spirit and played a more aggressive and attacking brand of football with short passes, a philosophy for which the Gunners are renowned for. They also closed down the Chelsea players and did not give them much time on the ball and thus reducing their influence on the game.

The Gunners deployed the high line defense to perfection which resulted in many Chelsea attackers getting caught offside on many occasions thus disrupting their attacks. Most importantly, Arsenal looked more hungry and motivated for the game which kept Chelsea on the back foot. Although the Blues pressed more in the second half for an equalizer, a determined Arsenal defense held on for a narrow win.

If Arsenal can carry the same momentum into the season then the glory days of yesteryears can come back to the Emirates.
