1. Defense needs major restoration and pace

Chelsea’s rear guard action was one of the main reasons they were able to close out marginal games at the business end of the season, due to which they were able to take maximum points which lead them to the title.

But, at certain points in the season, the lack of pace in the defense was exposed by teams like Tottenham and it was again made by a young and energetic Red Bull attack.

In the second half where many thought that Chelsea would be running away with the tie as most of the first team members were on the field, it was a shock to witness the shambolic defense from Terry and Co. where at times they were fixated to the ground just to see the ball at the back of the net.

Cahill and Terry are great defenders as long as the attacker is in front of them, but with Terry’s age and Cahill’s natural lack of pace, causes them problems while running after a ball.

After yesterday’s performance, bringing John Stones to the Bridge should be considered the main priority at the moment.
