Tuesday EPL Results; Tonight’s Fixtures

Tuesday was the first of a two day “catch-up” round of fixtures for the Premier League as the schedule gets squeezed with the cup fixtures that are also going on concurrently this time of year.  Three of the Big 4 played & won as they all kept up their title pushes though it looks increasingly like it’s Man U’s title to lose.

Arsenal 2-1 Everton
Arsenal defeated Everton with a comeback performance over an Everton side that looked good value for the win prior to Arsenal’s goals.  Everton’s first half goal scored by Louis Saha was scored in a most controversial fashion as the Frenchman finished well despite looking at least 2 or 3 yards offside when he received the ball but the goal was allowed to stand.  Arsenal had to wait until later in the second half for their goals but 2 goals in 6 minutes overturned a scoreline against a Everton side that will be no doubt disappointed after playing very well throughout the match.  Andrey Arshvain scored Arsenal’s opener in the 70th minute on a goal that looked very similar to Everton’s though the Russian staying clearly onside despite the deflection before finishing being the difference.  Sometimes maligned defender Laurent Koscielny scored Arsenal’s winner with a headed goal that looked nearly exactly like his goal against Ipswich in the Carling Cup semifinal second leg.  There was further controversy following the match when David Moyes claimed Arsenal’s captain, Cesc Fàbregas, made disparaging comments about Lee Mason the match official.  However, the FA will not take any action against Fàbregas as Moyes’ claims could not be proven.

Manchester United 3-1 Aston Villa
Man Uput in another solid performance as they continue their form of title-winning favorites. Wayne Rooney scored a brace for the Mancunians as well as the Old Trafford hero returned to scoring ways.  His opener on the stroke of only one minute in was the simplest of Route 1 goals you’ll ever see at the EPL level.  On the halftime mark, Rooney had his & Man U’s second on a deft little finish from inside the 6 on an expertly delivered cross by Nani.  Darrent Bent continued his terrific form & offered Aston Villa some hope around the hour mark when he knocked home from the center of the box following a swift Villa attacking move.  However, Man U waited only a few minutes to reply to Bent’s goal & quickly crush those hopes for the visitors when Nemanja Vidic hit a guided missile of a shot from near the edge of the box that found the upper 90 of the goal.  I hate Man U, but that was a sweet goal, I admit.

Sunderland 2-4 Chelsea
Chelsea’s four-goal output downed a stern but eventually overmatched home Sunderland side & continued what looks to be an in-season revival for Chelsea.  Phil Bardsley got Sunderland off to a flying start with a goal only 4 minutes in for the home side before Frank Lampard equalized from the spot for Chelsea on the quarter-hour mark after Ashley Cole had won the penalty.  The two sides again traded goals in the 23rd & 26th minutes, as first, Salomon Kalou for Chelsea & then Kieran Richardson for Sunderland scored, respectively.  But Chelsea put the action-packed game to bed when John Terry scored on the rebound in the 60th minute before Nicolas Anelka sealed the win for certain in stoppage time.

West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Wigan Athletic
West Brom raced out to a lead in the 5th minute when Peter Odemwingie scored again beating the offside trap to continue his fine season ( the Nigerian striker has 9 goals in 19 matches).  Charles N’Zogbia restored equal terms for Wigan a quarter of an hour later when he powered in a freekick from just outside the box from the right side.  N’Zogbia’s teammate, Ben Watson, repeated the freekick effort but from the left side & with a tight curling effort instead.  Marc-Antoine Fortuné saved a point for West Brom 11 minutes from time when he nodded home a header from close range.

So there’s a rundown of last evening’s EPL action & the remaining league sides play tonight with fixtures as follow:

Birmingham City v Manchester City
Blackburn Rovers v Tottenham Hotspur
Blackpool v West Ham United
Bolton Wanderers v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Fulham v Newcastle United
Liverpool v Stoke City

Andy Carroll, Liverpool’s big signing, will most likely not play tonight as he continues to work back from a thigh injury but their other big money signing, Luis Suárez, of Ajax Amsterdam will be making his debut after being cleared to play following his signing during the week.
