11 Premier League players overlooked in Thomas Tuchel's England squad

On Friday, the first England squad picked by new manager Thomas Tuchel was unveiled. It would be a stretch to say it's been well received, as Tuchel baffled fans by picking 4 goalkeepers and recalling ageing veterans like Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker. While some big names, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire and Ollie Watkins, missed out through injury, there was plenty of Premier League talent that may feel hard done by having been left out.

GK: Nick Pope - Tuchel's bizarre decision to select 4 goalkeepers in his squad makes Nick Pope's omission all the more strange. While he has struggled with injuries this season (and throughout his career), on his day Pope might just be England's best keeper. If the struggling Aaron Ramsdale was worth calling up, it feels as though Pope was worthy of consideration.

RB: Ben White - Ben White famously caused quite a stir by deeming himself unavailble for England selection under Gareth Southgate's tenure. With Tuchel now at the helm, it was hoped by many that White would be welcomed back into the fold. In fairness, Tuchel stated the White was once again available to be called up for the national side but was not picked due to a recent injury. While that may be true, White has returned from injury for Arsenal and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to get him back in the England setup.

CB: Jarrad Branthwaite - Branthwaite appeared to be the next great England centre-back when he burst onto the scene but Everton's defensive struggles seem to have quited that talk. However, with Everton now appearing defensively solid under David Moyes, Branthwaite could be worth taking another look at. He's comfortable on the ball, physical and still just 22 years old, so could be a fixture in the England squad for years to come.

CB: Tyrone Mings - Tuchel appears to have gone for experience over youth with his selections. With that in mind, Mings seems like a player who could have been worthy of consideration. The underrated centre-back has been performing well in both the Premier League and Champions League this season for Aston Villa. Like Branthwaite, he'd also provide a left-footed option in England's defence.

LB: Tyrick Mitchell - Left back may be England's weakest area and, in fairness, there are far worse omissions from the squad than Mitchell. With that being said, Mitchell has shown flashes of excellence this season for Crystal Palace and could have been worth a look at at the international level.

CDM: Adam Wharton - Wharton may not have had quite as good as season as last year, which saw him break into the England setup, but his form in recent games has been excellent. He's a young player who could grow with the group and likely would have inspired more excitement from fans than the selection of Jordan Henderson.

CM: Harvey Elliott - I'm not convinced Elliott is entirely ready to represent England but I would say the same thing of Curtis Jones. If Jones was deemed worthy of selection, perhaps Elliott should also be on Tuchel's radar moving forward.

CAM: James Maddison - While England is spoiled for choice in this position, Maddison has proven himself worthy of an opportunity. He's been excellent for Tottenham this season but Tuchel instead opted to go for England regular Phil Foden who's form has been inconsistant at best.

RW: Ethan Nwaneri - Nwaneri is another name that you could argue is not quite ready for international football as he is still establishing himself as a premier league regular. However, he is another promising youngster who has looked excellent and could be a real asset for England moving forward.

LW: Callum Hudson-Odoi - Hudson-Odoi has been an underrated part of Nottingham Forrest's scintillating form this season. While Hudson-Odoi received a lot of hype early in his career, he finally seems to be reaching his potential and could have been worth a shot in another area of the England side that lacks depth.

ST: Liam Delap - Delap has been outstanding for Ipswich Town this season despite his clubs struggles. While Delap was called up to England's under 21's side, it's hard to argue he hasn't outperformed Dominic Solanke who was called up to the senior squad.
