#4 – Timo Werner (Chelsea)

There is a genuine discussion to be made here. A product of the youth academy of VfB Stuttgart, Werner joined RB Leipzig in 2016 in a deal worth €10million after spending 14 years with his boyhood club.

After tearing up the Bundesliga, Liverpool and Chelsea came calling for the German forward but ultimately, it was the Blues who paid up the release clause.

After sealing a move to Stamford Bridge, however, the German international has never been able to replicate the goalscoring ability he showcased when at Leipzig. This is a player, after all, who has managed to score 95 goals in 159 appearances in Germany.

Add to the fact: there were only two players from Europe’s top five leagues who managed to score more goals than Werner in the 2019/20 season. The two players being Robert Lewandowski and Ciro Immobile from Lazio.

He is known for his pace, finishing, and link-up play. Werner is adept at playing anywhere across the frontline, but generally occupies the center or left-forward position.

Attackers who can score from the left channel, central locations, and the right channel are perhaps the most valuable commodity in football. The only players who instantly come to mind are Raheem Sterling and Sadio Mane.

Werner’s ability to score and assist makes him a phenomenal buy as it is, but to make things even better, he is a tremendous player in general play as well. Bringing in Werner would be difficult for Bayern Munich considering Chelsea doesn’t have many options upfront apart from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz.
