Manchester United’s transfer targets

Erik ten Hag is not sitting with his hands behind his back at Old Trafford. Despite the riches of youth, the Dutchman also has funds to work with.

As a result, the Red Devils are in the market for a central midfielder to replace the outgoing Paul Pogba. The name out of the hat for this position is Frenkie de Jong.

  • The midfielder played and made his name under Ten Hag at Ajax. The former Utrecht manager is now looking to reunite with De Jong.
  • As reported in the Manchester Evening News, the club is in advanced talks with FC Barcelona for De Jong with the fee package totalling around €80 million.
  • The reports state United could get their man despite the player and Barcelona manager Xavi being tight-lipped and dismissive of the talks.
  • De Jong has stated his desire to continue playing Champions League football, which could hinder any potential deal for the Manchester club. But Barcelona’s financial situation could see them reluctantly lose their player to raise funds for their own transfer activity.

Erik ten Hag is also not doing his former club any favours by targeting the duo, Antony and Jurrien Timber. The pair of Ajax men could be available for a combined fee of £75 million.

Another rather interesting transfer rumour surrounds the purchase of Christian Eriksen. The Danish midfielder has rejected a new contract offer from Brentford, which has interested people at Old Trafford.

United could see him as a good backup for Bruno Fernandes. But they might have to contest with Eriksen’s previous club Tottenham Hotspur and the mega-rich Newcastle United for his signature.
