Liverpool haven’t had the best of seasons this time around. They’ve had their bad luck with injuries, and most of those injuries have been suffered by their defenders. Their top choice centre backs have all been injured for the majority of this season.

Virgil Van Dijk had a horrifying injury last year playing against Everton. Joel Matip got injured, Joe Gomez also got injured which left the Reds with no choice but to use loanees/academy players. They’ve had loanee Ozan Kabak, who might stay permanently according to reports, and Phillipps playing as centre backs for the majority of 2021.

They’d definitely close out the season as the only two left in the squad.

What’s the update on Joe Gomez’s recovery? How will Liverpool benefit from it next season?

But, there’s some good news for Liverpool fans. Jurgen Klopp before the game against Leeds United mentioned that Joe Gomez is recovering very well from the injury, and has already started running on the field. There’s not a “reaction” on the knee when he’s doing runs outside, according to the Liverpool boss. He didn’t really give a date to when Gomez would return, but it won’t be before next season.

He also mentioned that Henderson, Matip and Van Dijk all are recovering well.

This is definitely a great sign for both Liverpool and their fans. One of the biggest reasons Liverpool have struggled this much on all fronts is because of the quality of the defenders that they’ve had at their disposal for the majority of 2021.

More from Liverpool FC

I don’t want to say the ones that they have are bad because they aren’t. If they were bad, they wouldn’t play for a club like Liverpool. What I would say is, they’re just not on that level, yet. They’re obviously not on the same level as Van Dijk or Matip, and that is what’s been hurting them.

But this piece of news must be very important for the club because Joe Gomez really is a very solid player. He was one of the most important players in their bid to secure a sixth Champions League trophy a couple of years ago. The same was the case when they won the first league title in the modern Premier League era, something that they had been chasing for the longest time.

As I said, he probably won’t be back before next season. But, I am sure Gomez would have a great season when he’s back, because as we have seen this season, he really is important. If people didn’t realise this back then, they surely have now.

Where do you think Liverpool would finish this season? What about next season when their injured players return? Let us know in the comments below!
