It’s close to two years now since Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the permanent manager at Old Trafford. The treble-winning striker was hired after an impressive display during his stint as a caretaker manager.
Despite the club starting the 2018/19 season on a bad note, the manager was able to finish in a European spot. Sadly, they could not progress further than the group stages of the Champions League following their fourth-placed finish in the 18/19 campaign.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the Premier League giants have not been able to win the English title. Included with their failure in England’s top-flight, the club has struggled to achieved Champions League qualification in successive seasons.
Prior to Solskjaer, they finished second under Jose Mourinho but took a backstep between then and now. This season, however, they are on the verge of finishing second again under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, securing back-to-back UCL qualifications if they continue to win games and suffer from no setbacks.
Moreover, there are monumental changes happening within the club since the appointment of the Norwegian. When Sir Alex retired, he left a comparatively aging squad for David Moyes which failed on almost every front. Not only did they finished outside of the top four but they also failed to get a Europa League spot.
Multiple managers were sacked and appointed by the club’s hierarchy with none of them able to lead the club back to its glory days. Though Jose Mourinho was on his way to prove his “The Special One”, the “third season syndrome” kicked in for the now Spurs boss.
He fell out with the likes of Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial which lead to his inevitable sacking. It was then Ole was named as a caretaker manager for a short duration with results were good enough to get the job as the permanent boss.
The academy lads have shined on the big stage under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Ever since his appointment in December 2018, Solskjaer has tried to improve things and has handled certain situations better compared to his predecessors.
He believed in Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, allowing them to prove their worth. The belief in Anthony Martial produced results in the 2019/20 season as the forward finished the campaign with 23 G/A in the Premier League.
Martial, alone, carried the team in the absence of Marcus Rashford. Ole also signed playmaker Bruno Fernandes from Sporting, who is leading the team towards new heights without the armband.
Every football fan across the world knows that Manchester United breeds amazing academy players. Under Mourinho, the academy players were starved and could hardly break into the first team.
Only six players were handed their senior debuts under Jose compared to Louis van Gaal’s 15 and Ole’s 13. Of the six players, only Scott McTominay is a regular in Solskjaer’s setup. However, the Norweigan has given the academy players a great run to prove themselves.
Amongst the debutants, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Dean Henderson are becoming regulars for the team whereas others are proving themselves abroad on loan. The “La Carrington” is slowly returning to its good old days.

Manchester United finally appoints a director of football and a technical director.
The club has appointed John Murtough as the director of football and Darren Fletcher as the technical director to look after the football operations at the club.
John Murtagh will work closely with the gaffer and will have complete responsibility for the football matters. Similarly, Darren Fletcher will look after the squad development which will be key to their pursuit of success long-term.

The recent appointment will allow Ed Woodward to focus only on the financial aspects and the football will be run by appropriate stakeholders. The club has tried to emulate the Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Ajax models.
Woodward has tried to fulfill Sir Alex Ferguson’s dreams by these appointments. SAF always wanted the club to be run by those who have the “United DNA” in them. The 2021 summer transfer window will be the first real test for these recent employments.
There is still a lot of work to be done by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his new workforce. He has already sold Chris Smalling, Alexis Sanchez, and other huge earners who failed to perform on a regular.
The last batch of deadwood is still left to be shipped out of the club and Ole is yet to overcome the semi-final barrier.
Despite making it to four semi-finals in his time, Manchester United have failed to go beyond and win gold. It will be interesting to see how OGS will take his chances in the ongoing season.
