#2: Mesut Ozil – Midfielder

Mesut Ozil’s well-publicized feud with Unai Emery was rather intriguing, and a little bit unfair towards the German national team legend. Ozil was frozen out of the first-team throughout the first portion of the 2019-20 season, and was truthfully used pretty sparingly by Emery throughout his 18-month tenure.

While Ozil is not the player he used to be, he is still the highest-paid player at the club, and the most technically gifted by a country mile as well.

With Emery gone, expect Ozil to start playing a starring role for the Gunners again, the way we were used to seeing under Arsene Wenger. They could really use his creativity moving forward.

#1: Lucas Torreira – Midfielder

One of the most baffling situations towards the final few months of Emery’s Arsenal tenure was the ridiculously awful treatment of Lucas Torreira, who became an instant hit at the Emirates when he joined in the summer of 2018.

While Torreira’s best performances at the club, near the end of 2018, came when played at the base of midfield, shielding the backline, Emery oddly started playing him as an advanced, pressing midfielder during the first few months of the 2019-20 season. Obviously, Torreira started playing poorly, and his confidence became clearly lower than we’d ever seen it before. Things even got to a point where Torreira was linked with moves away from the club in January.

Whoever the new permanent manager is, they must recognize Torreira’s talent better than Emery did, and start playing him in his natural position. He simply could not adapt to what Emery was asking of him, and you can’t really blame the Uruguayan for his poor form.
