Wayne Rooney will play outside of England for the first time in his career. He will go to the capital of America and join the MLS.
Major League Soccer has gained another big name addition. Wayne Rooney has been signed by D.C. United on a three-and-a-half year contract. Rooney will wear the number nine shirt and is added to the list of Premier League legends who have played in America. David Beckham, Tim Cahill, Thierry Henry, and now Wayne Rooney.
Rooney will end his Premier League career with 491 appearances and 208 goals in his 16 seasons. He will fall short of Alan Shearer’s EPL scoring record by 52 goals. He does though own the record for most goals with one club (183 with Man United) and most consecutive seasons with at least 10 goals (11). Rooney ranks third in EPL assists (103) and as the third-youngest goalscorer at 16 years and 351 days old.
Rooney joins the worst team in the MLS
The club Rooney is joining is currently at the bottom of the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer. D.C. United is on 10 points after 12 games, having won only twice this season. The MLS playoff spots are given to the top six teams from the Eastern Conference and the top six from the Western Conference.
D.C. United is currently 11 points behind the sixth-place side, the Philadelphia Union. The club has only two players with more than two goals, Darren Mattocks and Yamil Asad. I don’t know if Rooney will have an instant impact like Zlatan did at the Galaxy, but he will certainly help D.C. out for the remainder of the season.
It is sad to see such a staple of the Premier League gone. Rooney has played in England since 2002 and is one of the many familiar faces from the EPL that is leaving. It will not be easy to remember that Wayne Rooney and Arsene Wenger aren’t in the league anymore. Rooney brought some amazing memories for the last decade and a half that will survive for generations.
