Other Notable Mentions

Fabian Delph, as I mentioned earlier, had a really assured game. His versatility in being able to slot into a few different roles will really work in his and England’s favor.

Dele Alli. I think in a season overall, Lingard ranks ahead of him on the pecking order. When Dele came on though, he had an immediate impact. His direct approach and assured quality in the final third led to an assist (which was definitely NOT a shot) for England’s second goal.

That demonstration, along with his link with the HurriKane, might edge him favorably into the starting XI.

Jordan Henderson. I think his appearance in this game rather than the Nigeria one wasn’t an indication that he won’t be starting. Southgate has stated he won’t play both Hendo and Eric Dier in the same team.

But Southgate also mentioned that the proximity of the Nigeria game to the end of the season for “some players” would mean that they didn’t stick entirely to the plan of this being the backup brigade competing for places.

In all likelihood, this was talking about Henderson and Young Trent’s Champions League Final. They are the only two Liverpool players involved in the squad, with Adam Lallana on standby.

Time will tell on who Southgate will pick. Personally, I agree fully with him when he said he has difficult decisions, but for a good reason. Competition for places is ALWAYS a good thing.
