The squad is currently littered with players they do not need. This summer, Mourinho needs to oversee a wholesale clearout if he wants to bring in fresh talent for the team.

Remnants from the Louis van Gaal era, such as Darmian and Blind, should be moved on. Marouane Fellaini should also move on. Chris Smalling, despite his years of service to the club, is not good enough to keep his spot anymore. Phil Jones is also a toss-up due to his injury problems. Despite all the early promise, Luke Shaw is probably on his way out as well.

Youth team players such as Timothy Fosu-Mensah have earned the right to take on some of these squad members’ responsibilities and should be given the chance to prove themselves. Scott McTominay was given a chance this season. He took it and ran with it.

One area of the pitch where United do not need to sign or shift anyone is at striker. With Lukaku, Rashford, and Martial, the Red Devils possess a blend of power, pace, and youth that could be the envy of other clubs for years to come. Sanchez and Mata bring experience.

Lingard brings a tireless team ethic, combined with a penchant for the spectacular. The pieces are there for United to build a truly vibrant, exciting team. The signing of someone like Gareth Bale would be a step sideways, or possibly back. It would necessitate the sale of another forward talent.
