It is one of the many moves that City made last summer. This allowed them to fulfill their potential and win the league.

The singings of Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, and Danilo gave City depth in the wingback positions and extra attacking outlets. United’s wingbacks for most of the season have been Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, two converted wingers. Both provide width down the flanks and have performed admirably into their thirties. This cannot go on. Their bodies will start slowing down sooner rather than later.

Luke Shaw would be the first choice to replace Young at left-back. The young Englishmen’s up and down relationship with Mourinho means that a replacement will probably have to be signed. Likewise on the other side with Valencia.

Matteo Darmian has proven to be disappointing on either side of the defense. Dutchmen Daley Blind has not gotten a look-in all season. Mourinho cannot be happy with his depth issues at both positions, and this might just be the first area that the Red Devils look to strengthen in the summer.

Valencia can probably keep going for another season or two, but United are one injury away from a defensive crisis at all times.
