Jack Grealish – Aston Villa

His current international status aside, Grealish had an important year in his growth as a player. Although only 19 years old, Grealish was really given a chance to impress under Tim Sherwood when he took over as manager late in the season. That trust in the young player paid off, as he turned in some performances that belied his years.

Perhaps no showing was as great as the one he turned in against Liverpool in the semi-final of the F.A. Cup. In a game that Villa won, Grealish seemed to run the show, constantly at the heart of all the memorable play that Villa strung together. He didn’t get on the scoresheet that day, but he didn’t need to. His mark was all over that game.

The fearlessness with which he glided by players on such a big stage could be compared to a younger Jack Wilshere, although that may yet prove to be disrespectful to Grealish given how Wilshere’s career has stagnated. One thing is clear though, he’s destined for greater things, and that will come sooner rather than later. He’s also well capable of taking a few heavy tackles too.

For now though he should remain with his current employers, because he will be given the chance to truly grow there as a player. The likes of Sinclair and Wilfried Zaha should be cautionary tails to this guy. Don’t move too soon, or you’ll end up on the fringes of the action. Next season he’ll be much improved in the heart of the action for Villa, and may even be in the running for young player of the year if all goes well.
